Aquatic activities in thalassotherapy centres are part of the millennia-old tradition of physical exercise in the marine environment. In ancient Greece, sea swimming was already considered a complete exercise recommended by Hippocrates. Roman thermae already had pools dedicated to aquatic exercises. Modern aqua aerobics was developed in 1960s America, initially for rehabilitating war-wounded, before becoming a wellness discipline in its own right. Aqua cycling, born in Italy in the 1990s, adds pedalling effort to the natural resistance of water. The marine circuit in heated seawater, a French thalassotherapy specialty, combines underwater jets, counter-current river and whirlpool baths in a continuous circuit. Practising these activities in seawater heated to 33°C, enriched with minerals and trace elements, transforms each session into a treatment in itself.
