💡

This aquatic activity takes place in the thalassotherapy centre's heated seawater pools, supervised by qualified professionals. Seawater at 33°C provides natural resistance while protecting joints, while its trace elements remineralise the body during exercise. An effective workout that doubles as a treatment.

Benefits

✓ Complete physical exercise with reduced joint impact thanks to buoyancy ✓ Gentle muscle strengthening through the natural resistance of seawater ✓ Improved venous return and blood circulation ✓ Remineralisation during exercise through seawater trace elements ✓ Natural lymphatic drainage through hydrostatic pressure ✓ Group class sociability and motivation ✓ Effective calorie burning without strenuous effort ✓ Relaxation and well-being through contact with heated seawater

Contraindications

⚠ Open wound or contagious skin infection

⚠ Severe heart or respiratory failure

⚠ Unstabilised epilepsy (aquatic environment)

⚠ Severe iodine allergy (seawater)

History & Origins

Aquatic activities in thalassotherapy centres are part of the millennia-old tradition of physical exercise in the marine environment. In ancient Greece, sea swimming was already considered a complete exercise recommended by Hippocrates. Roman thermae already had pools dedicated to aquatic exercises. Modern aqua aerobics was developed in 1960s America, initially for rehabilitating war-wounded, before becoming a wellness discipline in its own right. Aqua cycling, born in Italy in the 1990s, adds pedalling effort to the natural resistance of water. The marine circuit in heated seawater, a French thalassotherapy specialty, combines underwater jets, counter-current river and whirlpool baths in a continuous circuit. Practising these activities in seawater heated to 33°C, enriched with minerals and trace elements, transforms each session into a treatment in itself.
