History & Origins

Sports coaching in thalassotherapy centres is part of the French tradition of marine fitness, born with the first thalassotherapy cures in the 1960s. It was Louison Bobet, cycling champion and founder of the Quiberon centre in 1964, who first combined sporting performance with the benefits of the sea. Seaside physical activities — sand walking, seawater aqua aerobics — were then enriched with modern technologies. The iMoove, a patented 3D ellispherical movement platform, revolutionised rehabilitation and muscle strengthening through its unique proprioceptive approach. The Swiss Ball, popularised by Swiss physiotherapists in the 1960s for postural rehabilitation, is now an essential coaching tool. Stretching, derived from 19th-century Swedish gymnastics practices, completes this arsenal. In thalassotherapy, coaching benefits from a naturally stimulating environment: iodine-rich marine air improves muscular oxygenation and recovery.
